Well, it was bound to happen eventually- we have a Falcons Master’s team!
A couple of our Falcons have been playing Master’s for a few years now, just under Monash Magic’s banner. But this yeah with some new additions to the club, and with a certain Co-President now old enough to qualify, we could make our own team and go it alone.
The Victorian Master’s tournament was held on the Queen’s Birthday weekend, 6-9 June. And a wet and cold one it was. The sun tried to dry us out but it was not to be. The grounds we’re saturated and the girls were basically playing in sludge in some cases. Thermals, beanies, moccies and snuggies all made an appearance. But with the wet weather came a good excuse to test out our new jackets (thanks to Nicci Norden), which were a huge success and look fantastic.
Being our first year, we were put in D Grade and with that brought some familiar competition- Brandon Heights and Monash. But unfortunately both teams proving too strong and winning both in tight matches. One round was deemed a washout with the weather turning horrid. But when we did win, we won big! Winning 18-4 and 17-1 in the playoff for 5th place.
Unfortunately we lost Trish to a calf injury on the Saturday, along with Cass pitching through the pain of a shoulder injury and many other existing injuries throughout the playing group popping up, all in all everyone did amazingly to get through relatively unscathed.
With Cass’s shoulder still not 100% we asked if anyone would like the opportunity to have a pitch and up popped Sharon’s hand. You would never have known she hadn’t pitched before, jumping straight in with strike outs and making plays like she’s played there all her life. She also jumped in and gave Ruth a rest from catching and if that wasn’t enough-hit a home run. Yeah, you can stay Shaz. What. A. Gun.
It was also a welcome back from injury for Jana- sliding and base running like a maniac, having some time in the infield for a change and to top it off- smacking a home run.
Despite it not being the result we had set out for, every one of the crew had their own stand out moments and should be proud of the performance of the inaugural Falcons Master’s team!
Thanks to CJ and Ruth for organizing the various things that needed to be organised. As well as a thank you to Leigh who came along to watch, but ended up going to early meetings and helping out where she could. And of course thanks to Geoff for taking the helm once again.
